Former Virginia Tech star Angel Daniel Vassallo poured in 31 points to lead Ponce past Mayaguez 97-86 in Puerto Rico’s BSN league.
The 6-6 swingman made 6 threes while shooting a blistering 75 percent (6-of-8) from behind the arc and 63 percent (5-of-8) from two-point range.
Vassallo also had 3 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal in the game.
Mike Harris (Rice, NBA) added 17 points for Ponce in the win.
But the star of the game was Vassallo, who is averaging 14.3 points and 3.7 rebounds this season.
Vassallo also played in Puerto Rico last season, when he was he BSN’s fifth leading scorer, averaging 18.4 points, 3.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds for Ponce.
In addition, he was in the France Pro A league that year, where he averaged a team-leading 17.1 points with 4 rebounds and 2.5 assists for Le Havre.
Vassallo also played in Puerto Rico in 2015 where he averaged 14.8 points and 4.4 rebounds to help lead Ponce to the BSN championship.
In addition, he scored 30 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead Ponce to a 75-66 victory over Atenienses de Manati to win the Puerto Rico BSN League Manuel Zeno Gandia Cup title that year, a four-day in-season tournament which included the eight top teams in the BSN League.
A star at Virginia Tech, Vassallo led the team in scoring as a senior at 19.1 points a game in 2008-09.
Immediately after graduating, he played overseas in France, averaging 17.8 points and making the all-star team.
He was also the Puerto Rico BSN Rookie of the Year in 2009.
