The USA Basketball Women’s U16 team routed Colombia 91-33 in the 2017 FIBA Americas Championship opener in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
ESPN No. 9 ranked high school sophomore Aliyah Boston (Worcester Academy) had a team-high 17 points with 9 rebounds, No. 1 Soph Sam Brunelle (William Monroe) added 13 points with 7 boards, and frosh Caitlin Clark (Dowling Catholic) chipped in 11 in the resounding victory.
“I thought it was a great game, a great team win,” USA head coach Carla Berube told usab.com. “All 12 players got some valuable minutes. Eleven out of the 12 played in their first international competition.”
“It is great to come away with a team win against a tough, Colombia team,” added Berube. “It feels good to have that first win.”
USA’s stifling defense held Colombia to a lowly 18 percent shooting from the field, and they dominated Colombia on the boards 64-36.
The Americans also dished out a whopping 22 assists as a team, compared to only 4 dimes for the Colombia squad.
“We had some great passes, and we did a great job of crashing the boards offensively and defensively,” said Boston. “I think we played a great game overall.”
