The USA Basketball men’s team rolled over Panama 97-56 in the opener of the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Darrun Hilliard (LA Clippers, Villanova) and Jonathan Holmes (Canton Charge, Texas) each scored 17, while Reggie Williams (Oklahoma City Blue, VMI) added 13 points and Jameel Warney (Texas Legends, Stony Brook) chipped in 10 points in the win.
The US got off to a fast start, leading 27-10 in the first quarter and 49-25 at halftime, limiting Panama to a lowly 28 percent field goal shooting after two quarters.
“Well, we set a better tone today with our starters than we did in our exhibition against the Dominican Republic,” USA coach Jeff Van Gundy told usab.com. “Our defense was good early.”
In the second half USA kept pouring it on, outscoring Panama 21-13 in the third period and 27-18 in the fourth to complete the blowout.
The Americans were on fire from behind the arc, sinking 11 threes in the game.
“3-point shooting is going to be very important, as well as defense, but that outside shooting will help us offensively create leads and separate ourselves,” said Reggie Williams, who buried 4 threes in the victory.
