The USA Basketball men’s team beat host Uruguay in a tough 74-66 win at the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup in Montevideo, Uruguay.
C.J. Williams (Texas Legends, NC State) poured in 16 points, Reggie Hearn (Reno Bighorns, Northwestern) scored 15, and Darrun Hilliard (LA Clippers, Villanova) added 13 points in the win.
Trailing 55-53 with 6:37 remaining in the game, the US took over, going on a 13-2 run capped by a three from Larry Drew II (Sioux Falls Skyforce, UCLA) that gave the Americans a commanding 66-57 lead with 3:07 left.
And the fact that their clutch victory was in front of a raucous Uruguay home crowd made it that much sweeter
“I don’t think there’s any better five minutes in life than coming back into a locker room after a great road win,” USA coach Jeff Van Gundy told usab.com. “That sense of satisfaction – everybody contributed. That part was really good.”
Again, defense was the key to the win, as USA held Uruguay to a lowly 37 percent field shooting and a miserable 13 percent (3-of-23) shooting from three.
“Our defense, that’s what we pride ourselves on,” said C.J. Williams. “That’s what is going to win us games. Shots may fall and shots may not fall, but as long as we get stops, we will always be in the game and we will always have a chance to win.”
