The USA Basketball men’s team rallied for a huge comeback win to beat Argentina 81-76 Sunday to capture the gold at 2017 FIBA AmeriCup in Cordoba, Argentina.
Jameel Warney (Texas Legends, Stony Brook) had 21 points with 7 rebounds, Darrun Hilliard (LA Clippers, Villanova) scored 15, while Reggie Hearn (Reno Bighorns, Northwestern) added 14 points on 4 threes in the championship victory.
Warney, who averaged 12.8 points and 8.6 rebounds five tournaments wins, was named AmeriCup MVP.
This was a gutty come-from-behind win for the Americans who were trailing by 19 points at 52-33 in the middle of the third quarter, before going on a 17-4 run to pull within six at 56-50 to end the third period.
In the fourth quarter, USA tied the score at 61-61 on a Hearn three with 7:04 left, then a Munford hoop with 5:59 remaining gave the Americans their first lead of the game at 63-61, which they never relinquished.
“This is something that you will never forget,” Hilliard told usab.com. “It’s really something that you tell your grandkids. That sense of pride knowing you are never counted out, no matter what the circumstances you are up against. There’s nothing you can’t do and nothing you can’t get by. Doing that with these guys, it’s amazing. It’s really amazing.”
USA head coach Jeff Van Gundy credited defense for the big victory.
“Argentina is a great team. They were beating us up pretty good,” said Van Gundy. “We were down 20 in the second half. But, because of great play, particularly by Jameel (Warney)… and a bunch of other guys, our defense kicked in and we were able to come up with a hard-fought win.”
