ESPN No. 79 ranked high school senior J’Raan Brooks has committed to St. John’s.
The 6-8 forward out of basketball power Garfield HS (Seattle), averaged 15.9 points and 7.1 rebounds this spring with Dream Vision on the Adidas circuit through eight games.
“For me, it was the perfect place for me to grow as a hooper under coach [Chris] Mullin and as man being away from home,” Brooks told Zagsblog. “They have a great program and have made numerous tournament appearances.”
“St. John’s has a great atmosphere on campus and during games at MSG which helped me pick my choice sooner than I thought,” he added. “I’m excited to attempt to make a major impact as a freshman any way I can.”
Brooks had previously committed to USC before pulling out in October due the school’s involvement in the FBI’s bribery investigation scandal.
The Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker believes that Brooks would have been a great fit for the Trojans.
“Brooks is a solid scorer who can hold his own inside at 6-8 and 215 pounds,” Zucker wrote. “He can consistently knock down jumpers from mid-range. His work on the glass will also help a team that tied for 154th in rebounding (36.1 rebounds per game).”
But now the big man is headed to St. John’s.
Scout loves Brooks’ game.
“Brooks is an old school four man who can face up and hit midrange jumpers or play with his back to the basket and post up, as he’s capable of hitting hook shots with both hands,” reads Scout’s analysis. “Brooks has a nice feel, which aids him both as a passer and rebounder.”
