Prairie View A&M’s Gary Blackston was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
The 6-2 junior guard from Baltimore, MD averaged 22 points, 6 rebounds and 2.5 steals in two games last week.
On Dec. 6 Blackston poured in a season-high 27 points with 7 rebounds and 5 steals in a 72-60 loss to Hawaii.
Then he scored 17 points in a 73-53 loss to Texas A&M on Dec. 9.
On the season, Blackston is second in the SWAC in scoring, averaging 17.7 points, along with 6.3 rebounds (6th/SWAC), 2.7 assists (t-7th/SWAC), and 1.9 steals (4th/SWAC).
“The way I play, I want to be like a baby LeBron,” Blackston told angelina.edu. “I try to do everything on a basketball court. I try to rebound, score, defend, whatever I can do to lead to a win.”
“They can put me in different positions,” added Blackston. “I can play point or shooting guard, and if they want, they can move me to a small forward position.”
A JUCO transfer from Angelina College (Lufkin, TX), Blackston led the team in rebounding last season, when he averaged 13.7 points and 6 rebounds and guided the school to 22 wins.
