Three-on-three basketball has been added as a new Olympic sport and will debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
The format will feature eight men’s and eight women’s 3×3 national teams, with four players per squad.
“USA Basketball is excited that 3×3 basketball has been added to the 2020 Olympic Games,” USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley told usab.com. “3×3 is a great way to develop the sport and expand it to parts of the world that might not otherwise be active in basketball.”
“It is a popular and growing sport; it’s non-stop; fast-paced; high energy; and an exciting version of the game,” Tooley added .
Its inclusion as an official Olympic sport is a significant step forward for 3×3 basketball around the globe.
“The hope behind making 3-on-3 an Olympic sport is to really open up Olympic basketball to parts of the world that struggle to field 12-person teams in 5-on-5 competition,” said Tooley. “3-on-3 is now played in countries like the Philippines, Estonia, Hungary and the Central African Republic. It’s much more accessible.”
Below are some of the rules that make 3×3 basketball such an exciting and up-tempo game:
The half-court game features a 12-second shot clock.
The game ends after a single 10-minute period or when one team reaches 21 points.
Every made shot inside the three-point arc is worth one point; shots beyond the arc are worth two.
After a change of possession on a missed shot or a turnover, the ball must be taken back beyond the three-point arc. The same rule applies after a made basket.
A team consists of four players—three starters and a substitute. There are no coaches.
