Oakland’s Keith Benson Signs In China

Former Oakland University star Keith Benson has signed with Guizhou in China’s NBL league.

The 6-11 forward comes the G League where we was the NBAGL’s third leading rebounder and was fifth in blocks this season, averaging 20.5 points, 10.4 boards, and 2.2 rejections for the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Benson was the G League Player of the Month for December, when he averaged 20.3 points, 12 rebounds, and a whopping 3.1 blocks to lead the Sioux Falls Skyforce to a 9-3 record.

Benson was also a key member of the 2015-16 Skyforce team that won the 2016 NBA D-League championship.

The title capped off an amazing season for Sioux Falls (40-10), who won an NBA D-League record 40 games, breaking the previous regular season wins mark held by the 2011-12 Los Angeles D-Fenders, which went 38-12.

A college star at Oakland University, Benson led the team in scoring and rebounds as a senior, averaging 17.9 points and 10.1 boards to guide the Golden Grizzlies to the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

He was second in the nation in blocks (3.8 bpg) that season and was named the Summit League Player and Defensive Player of the Year.

Benson graduated as Oakland’s all-time career leader in blocked shots and is the only player in Summit League history to finish with over 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots.

The 48th overall pick in the 2011 Draft by the Hawks, Benson played part of the 2011-12 NBA season with the Warriors.

He has also played overseas in Belarus (Tsmoki-Minsk), Estonia (Kalev/Cramo), Italy (Banco di Srd), Lithuania (Neptunas), the Philippines, and Turkey (Banvit).

In China, Benson will be joining a Guizhou team that was led by leading scorer Mark Lyons (Arizona), who averaged 35.7 points this season.
