ESPN No. 91 ranked high school senior Eric Ayala has committed to Maryland.
The 6-5 point guard out of Putnam Science Academy (CT) averaged 14.2 points on the Under Armour AAU circuit this year for WeR1, leading the team to the 2017 UAA championship.
With the Under Armour finals win, WeR1 became the first ever 17U squad defend their title at the event.
Ayala has transferred to IMG Academy (FL) for his senior season.
“Honestly, I’ve been away from home for three years,” Ayala, a native of Wilmington, DE, told delawareonline.com of choosing the Terps. “That was kind of the nail in the coffin, now [my mom] can come watch me play again.”
His IMG coach John Mahoney said Maryland is getting a gem in the 6-5 Ayala.
“His size is what I think separates him from some of the other guards,” Mahoney told the Baltimore Sun. “He’s a big guard, he’s got great court vision. He can see the floor very well and he can score.”
“I think he’s a very good perimeter shooter, gets to the rim,” added Mahoney. “He loves to find his teammates.”
The Terps beat out the likes of Arizona, Indiana, Oregon, Syracuse, Ohio State, LSU, Georgetown, and Miami to land Ayala.
At Maryland, Ayala will join fellow 2018 recruits No. 15 Jalen Smith and No. 39 Aaron Wiggins.
