No. 7 Jr Dana Evans Named To USA U18 Team

ESPN No. 7 ranked high school junior Dana Evans has been named to the USA U18 Women’s National Team that will compete in the 2016 FIBA Americas Championship July 13-17 in Valdivia, Chile.

Evans is replacing No. 1 senior Crystal Dangerfield (Blackman H.S./UConn), who has a hip injury and is unable to play.

The 5-6 point guard led the state of Indiana in scoring, averaging a whopping 35.8 points along with 5 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.3 steals this season for West Side High School (Gary, IN).

“I was surprised and excited,” Evans told usab.com. “I saw Colorado Springs pop up on my phone, and I jumped up. This means a lot to me, being the first girl or boy from Gary, Indiana, to play for a USA Basketball junior national team.”

“I have really strong faith in what God has planned for me,” added Evans. “I’m dedicated to this game of basketball and enjoy playing it. This was a dream come true, and I am thankful for the opportunity.”

U18 head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said that the explosive Evans is a talented player who will help fill the void left from Dangerfield’s unfortunate injury.

“Dana will be a great addition to our team,” said McConnell-Serio, who is also Pitt’s women’s basketball coach. “From what we saw, [Evans] is a tremendous point guard.”

“She is very quick, athletic and can create her own shot or can create for her teammates, can disrupt the other team defensively and make things happen,” the coach added. “That allows us to play at an up-tempo pace with her on the floor.”

The USA squad opens up the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship against Guatemala on July 13.

The tournament includes eight teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. The top four finishers qualify for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Below is the complete U18 roster:

No. 41 Sr Jeannie Boehm (New Trier H.S./Harvard)
