No. 2 Jr Zion Williamson Not Buying Into Hype

Highly coveted ESPN No. 2 ranked high school junior and YouTube dunking sensation Zion Williamson is not buying into the massive fanfare that surrounds him.

“I just try to focus on being the best that I can be,” Williamson told USA Today. “A lot of people play up the hype and everything like that, but I focus on getting better. I want to be the best and that takes work, but it can be a lot to deal with sometimes.”

The 6-8, 230-pound forward averaged a whopping 36.8 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2.5 blocks this season for Spartanburg Day HS (SC), guiding the team to their second straight SCISA 2A state championship.

Williamson, an athletic marvel famous for his otherworldly slams, has nearly one million followers on Instagram and even superstar rapper Drake is a big fan and was seen rocking Williamson’s No. 12 Spartanburg jersey on social media.

The heavily recruited big man has offers from blue chip schools such as Kansas, Louisville, UNC, and UCLA, but is not letting the potentially overwhelming attention distract him.

“I don’t get caught up in the whole process,” said Williamson “I just enjoy it and I’m building relationships with everyone. I don’t even know if I’ll announce a list or anything like that. I’ll eventually pick the school I feel most comfortable with and the school that presents the best situation for me. For now I’m just focused on getting better in every way.”

Scout’s Evan Daniels loves Williamson’s game.

“Zion Williamson is a unique prospect,” Daniels told kentucky.com. “He’s obviously gifted and a physical freak, in terms of his athletic ability. I think he has the potential to be a really good rebounder. He’s versatile enough to play out on the perimeter, but he’s also really effective around the goal.”
