ESPN No. 48 ranked high school junior Markell Johnson has committed to NC State.
The 6-1 point guard averaged a whopping 31.6 points along with 7.4 rebounds this season for East Tech High School (Cleveland, OH).
“He’s a phenomenal athlete who can score in bunches,” NC State coach Mark Gottfried told the News & Observer about Johnson’s game. “He’s got great speed and explosiveness.”
Johnson also had a strong spring, averaging 18.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists on the Nike EYBL circuit for King James.
Johnson said that he is graduating a year early and reclassifying into the 2016 class.
He plans to suit up for the Wolfpack this fall.
At NC State, Johnson will join top five 2016 recruit Dennis Smith Jr., a point guard who joined the Wolfpack in January to heal his torn ACL, as well as No. 53 senior power forward Darius Hicks, and 7-0 Turkish star Omer Yurtseven.
Yurtseven poured in an eye-popping 91 points and had an incredible 28 rebounds in a game for the Turkish national U18 team back in May.
The Wolfpack beat out the likes of Louisville, Texas A&M, Ohio State, and West Virginia to land the coveted Johnson.
