NBA’s Van Gundy USA Basketball Coach of the Year

Former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy has been named the 2017 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year.

Van Gundy led USA to the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup gold medal, and also guided the squad to a 2-0 record the World Cup Qualifying Games.

“To be able to represent your country is certainly an honor in itself,” Van Gundy told usab.com. “Something like coach of the year is above and beyond. I’m really honored by it all.”

Under Van Gundy, USA went a perfect 5-0 at the 2017 AmeriCup held 28-Sept. 3 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Cordoba, Argentina.

USA won beat their opponents by a whopping 19.6 points per game at the event.

“Jeff had a difficult task in 2017 for USA Basketball, leading teams in major competitions that had very little training time, but he handled the challenges successfully,” said USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley. “We are very grateful for his service and his leadership.”

A long-time NBA coach, Van Gundy has compiled a 430-318 in 11 seasons as a head coach of the Knicks and Rockets.

In that stretch he led his team to the playoffs nine times.
