North Carolina Central, which won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament by beating Norfolk State 67-59 on Saturday, is busy preparing for their NCAA Tournament first round matchup against UC Davis on Wednesday, March 15.
“They probably don’t know a bunch about us as well,” NCC head coach LeVelle Moton told newsobserver.com of the Big West Conference champ UC Davis (22-12). “We’ll pull an all-nighter and study and put a game plan together for a really good basketball team.”
It’s only the second March Madness berth in school history for the MEAC’s Eagles (25-8), who also made the big dance back in 2014.
If NC Central beats the Aggies, it would be the program’s first ever NCAA tourney win.
NCC is led by MEAC Player of the Year Patrick Cole, a 6-5 guard who averaged 19.5 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists this season.
6-1 senior guard Dajuan Graf is the team’s No. 2 scorer, averaging 14.3 points and 5.2 assists.
North Carolina Central is a tough defensive team, whose stingy 63.4 points allowed per game is 22nd in the nation.
Cole said the team is ready for the challenge facing them in the NCAA Tournament.
“It’s one game at a time now,” said Cole. “You win or you go home. And around this time, nobody wants to go home. No one wants to stop playing basketball. Basketball is our life so, we going to go out here and look to get a couple of wins and a couple of upsets.”
