Former Long Beach State star Eugene Phelps was named the Puerto Rico BSN league Player of the Week.
The 6-7 forward from Los Angeles poured in 24 points with 10 rebounds to lead Guayama to a 79-76 win over Santurce.
Phelps shot a blistering 67 percent (6-of-9) from the field and sank 12 of 15 free throws in the game.
He also had 2 steals in the victory.
On the year, Phelps is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 17.2 points and 6.2 rebounds for Guayama.
Last season he also played in Puerto Rico, averaging 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds with Arecibo.
A college star at Long Beach State, Phelps was a member of the team’s “Fab 4,” which led the 49ers to the 2012 Big West regular season and tournament titles, and their first NCAA tournament bid under coach Dan Monson.
In high school, Phelps averaged 14.1 points and 7.2 rebounds as a senior to lead Woodland Hills Taft to a 27-4 record and the Los Angeles City Section title.
