The Los Angeles Lakers have signed former Marquette star and 2017 D-League MVP Vander Blue.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 6-4, 200-pound shooting guard is coming off a strong NBA Las Vegas Summer League where he averaged personal highs of 15 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent from three for the Lakers squad.
Blue also dished out 3 assists per game (also a summer league high for him), while grabbing 3.8 rebounds per contest.
With his outstanding summer league performance, Blue was hoping for a shot with the NBA Lakers this season and now he has it.
“I tried to do a little bit of everything. Rebound, score, assist. Try to make the right play for my team,” Blue told silverscreenandroll.com of his summer play. “I think [the Lakers’] got a good chance to see me run the team and show my leadership.”
The 2017 D-League MVP [now called the G League] was the league’s third leading scorer this season, averaging 24.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.6 steals for the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
Blue, who scored 30 or more points 10 times this year, led the D-Fenders to the Western Conference’s top record at 34-16.
The team’s 34 wins were the second most in the history of the franchise.
On March 29, Blue sank a NBADL-record 23 foul shots while pouring in a season-high 41 points in a 139-132 victory over the Reno Bighorns.
In 2015-16, he averaged a whopping 26.3 points for the D-Fenders.
A star at Marquette, Blue led the team in scoring as a senior at 14.8 points a game when he guided the school to a 26-9 record and the NCAA tournament’s East Regional Final.
He was also named the team’s MVP and Most Improved Player that year.
Undrafted, Blue has averaged 5.4 points, 1.8 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in parts of two NBA seasons with the Celtics and Lakers.
