Scout’s No. 14 ranked high school sophomore Charles Smith IV is transferring to 2017 DICK’s Nationals champion La Lumiere (La Porte, IN).
The 6-5 guard led Westbury Christian (Houston, TX) to their fifth consecutive TAPPS 5A state championship this season, pouring in 24 points in the 80-50 title game win over Frisco Legacy Christian.
“Charles has a chance to be one of the elite perimeter players in the 2019 class,” new La Lumiere head coach Pat Holmes told FloHoops.com. “He’s an explosive athlete who has the ability to score on all three levels on a consistent basis.”
“Charles’ versatility, high basketball IQ, and intense work ethic is what really excited us as a coaching staff,” added coach Holmes. “In addition to his on-court success, Charles is also a great student and kid who will be a great addition to the La Lu family.”
Smith will be joining a powerhouse La Lumiere team that went 27-1 this season and beat Montverde Academy (FL) 70-52 in March to win the DICK’s title and earn the designation as the nation’s No. 1 high school team.
This year’s squad was led by ESPN No. 13 ranked high school senior Brian “Tugs” Bowen, No. 8 Sr Jaren Jackson (Michigan State), and No. 49 Sr Jordan Poole (Michigan).
Next year’s La Lumiere team will feature current No. 25 Soph Tyger Campbell.
Campbell, a 5-11 point guard, averaged 11.3 points and 7.8 assists on 44 percent from three this season.
In 2017-18, Smith will be joining Campbell to create a dynamic backcourt for La Lumiere next season.
