Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell Top Rookie Scorer

Former Louisville star Donovan Mitchel is leading all NBA rookies in scoring.

The sensational 6-3 shooting guard, who was the 13th pick in the 2017 Draft, is averaging 18.1 points and 3.4 assists this season for the Jazz.

Mitchell averaged 22 points, 4 assists, and 2.5 steals last week, including pouring in 32 in a 103-100 loss to the Bulls on Dec. 13.

This came after he put up a whopping 29 points per game for the Jazz the previous week.

For the month of December, the surging Mitchell is averaging 25.8 points a game.

“He’s not just one of the best rookie scorers in December, he’s the league’s 13th best scorer in the entire NBA in December,” wrote SLC Dunck’s Mychal Lowman. “He’s not supposed to be this good this early in the season.”

Celtics’ head coach Brad Stevens has been equally impressed with Mitchell.

“He’s special. He’s a really good player,” Stevens, whose Celts’ lost to Mitchell’s Jazz 107-95 on Dec. 15, told the Boston Herald. “His ability to defend, his toughness, his shot-making ability, plus he’s just got a moxie about him, he’s got a way about him that people would say is beyond his years.”

A college star at Louisville, Mitchell led the team in scoring last season as a sophomore, averaging 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while guiding the Cardinals to a 25-9 record and NCAA Tournament’s second round.

He was also named to the All-ACC First Team that year.

Draftexpress.com loves Mitchell’s game.

“[He has] a chiseled 211 pound frame and tremendous athleticism that allows him to play much bigger than his size,” reads the website’s analysis of the former Cardinals star. “He’s got great speed and body control in the open floor, and is a big time leaper off two feet, posting a 36 ½ inch no-step vertical at the Combine.”

ESPN’s No. 43 ranked player in the 2015 high school class, Mitchell averaged 14.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.8 steals as a senior at Brewster Academy (NH), leading the team to their second straight National Prep Championship.
