Phil Taylor of Shorter (Ga.) College is shattering records early in the 2016-17 season. On Nov. 28th, he torched Carver for 62 points, setting a new single-game mark in the Gulf South Conference. Last weekend, Taylor hit a season-record 20 free throws against Hiwassee as part of a 41-point effort.
Taylor, a 5-10 guard, is averaging a whopping 36.7 points per game and holds a commanding lead over Central Washington’s Dom Porter (28.3 ppg) in the national scoring race. Taylor also shares the top spot in 3-pointers per game (4.33).
It’s been a long, wild ride in college basketball for Taylor, a top 50 point guard coming out of Wheeler (Ga.) High in Atlanta. His college career started in 2010 at Division I Florida International as a top recruit for former coach Isaiah Thomas, the NBA legend. Taylor averaged 11.7 ppg in 41 games at FIU but left the program - and basketball after the season.
He returned to action last season, averaging 25.1 ppg to finish sixth in the nation as Shorter finished 14-15. This season, he’s aiming higher from an individual and team perspective. Taylor turns 26 in January, which means he’s one of the oldest college basketball players in the nation and also one of the best.
The Hawks return to action Thursday night, playing host to conference foe Delta State.
There’s excellent D2 basketball being played in and around Charlotte, NC this season. Pfeiffer College won 10 games total during point guard A.J. Clark’s first two seasons, 2012-13 and 2013-14. The Falcons have a chance to match that total on Jan. 3rd.
Clark, who received a medical redshirt after an injury ended last season following five games, poured in 31 points Monday to lead his team past St. Andrews and extend their season-opening unbeaten streak to seven games.
The Falcons are winning with a flourish, as well, pouring in 108.3 points per game to lead the nation. They’ve reached triple digits five times, including a 126-113 exhibition loss to UNC Wilmington, a Division I program that won the Colonial Athletic Association last season and is favored to repeat.
Clark is one of four Falcons scoring in double figures. He averages 17.3 ppg, Mike Smith chips in 16.3 and Josh Calhoun adds 15.3. Aggressive defense is Pfeiffer’s foundation. The Falcons lead the nation in steals (16.9 per game) and turnover margin (15.9 per game).
Pfeiffer travels to Emmanuel (Ga.) on Thursday night.
Queens, which is located in Charlotte, is also unbeaten. The Royals thumped South Atlantic Conference rival Coker College 83-55 on Monday to improve to 11-0 and remain the highest ranked team in the Southeast region.
Queens is coached by Bart Lundy, who returned for his second stint as the program’s leader after a short run at DI High Point. Queens has outscored its victims by 20 points per game this season and is also thriving on defense, holding foes to 39.6 percent shooting while forcing 18.3 turnovers per game.
Daniel Camps leads a balanced scoring attack with 15.8 ppg.
Queens entertains Mars Hill at 4 p.m. Saturday.
