Rhode Island’s Xavier Munford Shines In GLeague

Rhode Island’s Xavier Munford Sizzles In GLeague

Former University of Rhode Island star Xavier Munford continues to sizzle in the NBA G League.   The 6-3 point guard averaged a whopping 28 points in three games last week for the Wisconsin Herd.   In the finale, Munford exploded for 36 points with 8 rebounds and 5 assists in a 123-117 win over the Westchester Knicks on Dec. 23.   On the season he is the G League’s fifth leading scorer, averaging 25.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 5.3 rebounds.   “Munford continues his excellent play, and could find himself getting scooped up by an NBA team sooner rather than later,” wrote gleague.nba.com’s Drew Zlogar.   Munford was a member of the gold-medal winning 2017 USA AmeriCup Team this summer, averaging 10.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3 assists.   He averaged 18.5 points and 5.3 assists for the G League’s Swarm last season.   A college star at Rhode Island, Munford led the team in scoring as a senior, averaging 16.9 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.   He scored over 1,000 points for the Rams in only two seasons.   Before transferring to Rhode Island, Munford played at JUCO Iowa Western College, averaging an ICCAC conference high 16.6 points a game on 37 percent shooting from three, and leading the school to a 24-9 record.   Undrafted, Munford played with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2015-16, averaging 5.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 14 games.   In the process he became the first Rhode Island player to debut in an NBA game since Lamar Odom back in 1999 (according to the Providence Journal).   For more basketball news to go http://www.blacktoptv.com/
