USA U23 Women Beat Japan To Win Four Nations

USA U23 Women Beat Japan To Win Four Nations

The USA Basketball Women’s U23 team beat Japan 103-71 Tuesday to capture the Four Nations Tournament Championship.   Asia Durr (Louisville) poured in 16 points, Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State) had 13 points with 6 assists, while Kalani Brown (Baylor) and Jamie Nared (Tennessee) each added 11 points in the win.   USA (3-0) jumped on top of Japan from the start, sprinting out to a 14-3 lead while playing stifling defense, holding Japan to a lowly 18 percent shooting (4-of-22) in the first quarter.   “We started off fast,” Durr told usab.com. “We pushed the ball, and we played as a team, which was key. We knew that they were aggressive, and they played hard and they played fast. We figured if we could jump on them soon, then we could take them down quick.”   Take them down quick was exactly what the US squad did, never looking back after building their early lead.   The red-hot Americans were on fire offensively, shooting 52 percent (39-of-74) from the field and a scorching 50 percent (9-of-18) from three in the game.   The US also crushed Japan on the boards, outrebounding them 66-35.   “I thought that was the best we have played in our three games,” said USA coach Jeff Walz. “The kids came out and did exactly what we asked them to do. We knew that Japan was very disciplined on defense, and we tried to attack early, which we did. We shared the ball extremely well and made open shots.”   “It’s been awesome, having the opportunity to work with the best of the best in our college game,” added Walz.     For more basketball news go to http://www.blacktoptv.com/
