NBA’s Renaldo Balkman Signs In Bahrain

Former NBA player and South Carolina star Renaldo Balkman had a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead Arecibo to a 103-97 win over Ponce in Game 3 of the Puerto Rico BSN league playoff quarterfinals.

The 6-8 forward also shot a blistering 89 percent (8-of-9) from the field and had 3 assists and 3 blocks in the victory, which gave the team a 3-0 lead in the series.

Former USC forward Davon Jefferson added 16 points and 7 rebounds for Arecibo in the win.

On the season, Balkman was the BSN’s 10th leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 16.9 points and 8.5 rebounds on 58 percent field goal shooting.

He comes from the Mexico LNBP league, where he averaged 15.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4 assists for Fuerza Regia Monterrey.

Last season, Balkman was in the NBA D-League where he averaged 16 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.1 steals (top 5 in the NABDL) for the Texas Legends.

He also played in Puerto Rico last year, where he averaged 15.7 points and 7.2 rebounds for Arecibo, leading the team to the BSN Finals.

For his stellar play he was named the Latinbasket.com All-Puerto Rican BSN Forward of the Year, and selected to the All-Puerto Rican BSN First Team.

In 2013-14, Balkman was back in Mexico where he was the LNBP league’s second-leading scorer at 22 points a game with Halcones Rojos. That year he was LNBP Player of the Year, Import Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year.

A first round 2006 draft pick by the Knicks (20th overall), Balkman averaged 4 points and 3.5 rebounds in six NBA seasons with the Knicks and Nuggets.

A star at South Carolina, Balkman led the team in rebounds and steals in his junior season before entering the NBA Draft.

The well-traveled Balkman has also played overseas in Venezuela and the Philippines.
