ESPN No. 16 ranked high school junior Jahvon Quinerly has committed to Arizona.
The 6-1 point guard averaged 20.4 points, 5.4 assists, and 1.9 steals this season for Hudson Catholic HS (Jersey City, NJ), leading the team to a 26-4 record and the North Jersey Non-Public B title.
For his outstanding play, Quinerly was named to the All-State First Team.
He also had a strong summer, averaging 18.8 points and 5.1 assists on 44 percent shooting from three for Sports U on the Under Armour Association circuit.
“I feel like they can get me to the highest level,” Quinerly told ESPN of joining the Wildcats. “Also, we will win. They have a history of making the Elite Eight.”
“I wanted to play with a very talented team, and that’s what they have,” added Quinerly. “I believe [Zona head coach] Sean Miller will push me to be the best player I can be.”
Sports U president Brian Coleman said that Quinerly is an old school guard with modern day athleticism.
“Jahvon is a throwback type of point guard with a new school skill set,” Coleman told Zagsblog. “He can run a team and make his teammates better with his playmaking ability and court vision. But he brings a new school skill set with his ability to score the ball from that position in various ways. Knocking down jump shots both mid range and long range…and his uncanny ability to score at the rim in traffic.”
“He’s one of the best I’ve seen at scoring in traffic behind Kyrie Irving,” added Coleman. “He’s going to be an impact player from day one.”
At Arizona, Quinerly will join fellow 2018 recruits No. 19 Shareef O’Neal and No. 43 Brandon Williams; along with 2017 signees No. 2 DeAndre Ayton, No. 35 Brandon Randolph, No. 41 Emmanuel Akot, No. 67 Ira Lee, and No. 94 Alex Barcello – if they’re not one-and-dones.
The Wildcats beat out the likes of Kansas, Villanova, UCLA, Stanford, and Virginia to land Quinerly.
